What is the salary and schedule?
Schedule: 48/96 shift
Annual Salary:
$129,207 – $148,399

Salary Incentives
We provide these incentives, in addition to base pay:
- Company officer certification: 5%
- First Aid and CPR instructor: 4%
- Uniform allowance: $1,300 per year
- Education reimbursement: $1,200 per year
- Apparatus operator: Engineer minimum when assigned
- Acting officer: Lieutenant minimum when assigned
How big is the department?
We staff 8 firefighters per shift, including 4 firefighter-paramedics, with a dual-medic ambulance. Engines and trucks are staffed with paramedics prepared for second-out medicals.
Does Piedmont Fire deploy on strike teams?
Yes. We participate in the California Master Mutual Aid Program and deploy Type 1 or Type 6 engines, as well as overhead and single-resource assignments.
Is Piedmont Fire unionized?
Yes. Our members are represented by the Piedmont Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 2683.

Eligibility and Minimum Requirements

What types of applicants can apply?
We accept applications from:

1. Lateral Firefighter/Paramedics
— already full-time firefighters OR recent seasonal firefighters
— with Firefighter I certification by conditional offer
— AND a valid Paramedic license

2. Entry-Level Firefighter/Paramedic Candidates
— experienced 9-1-1 paramedics who have not yet been firefighters
— must complete a certified fire academy upon hire
What are the minimum qualifications for lateral applicants?
Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic applicants must have:

Valid California EMT-Paramedic license (or National Registry with CA license by conditional offer)
- California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification (by conditional offer)
- One
of the following: Current full-time employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic in a paid department OR Two full paid seasonal firefighter assignments (6+ months each) in the past two years
- Experience as a transport paramedic
- High school diploma or equivalent

Note: Laterals do not need to be on the FCTC eligibility list at time of hire.
What are the minimum qualifications for entry-level applicants?
Entry-level Firefighter/Paramedic applicants must have:

Valid California EMT-Paramedic license (or National Registry with CA license by conditional offer)
- Minimum one year of full-time experience as a paramedic on a 9-1-1 ambulance
- Current CPAT card at time of application
- Placement on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List

High school diploma or equivalent

Entry-level hires who complete the process will attend a fully paid certified fire academy as part of onboarding.
I’m an experienced paramedic but not a firefighter. Should I apply?
Yes—if you meet the entry-level qualifications. Piedmont Fire is an excellent place for motivated, clinically strong paramedics who want to transition into the fire service with strong support and training.
What are the licensing and final offer requirements?
All applicants must have:
- Valid California Class C Driver License
- Satisfactory driving record
- Ability to pass background investigation, fingerprinting, and pre-employment physical
- Willingness to work 48-hour shifts and deploy on mutual aid when needed
Can I visit the station?
Yes, and we strongly encourage it

Chief’s Interviews: January 30, 2026

Conditional offers: 1st week of February
Background and physical: February-early March
Final offers: mid-March

Do lateral hires need to complete an Academy?
No. For laterals, we have a two-week, in-house training program with immediate transition to 48/96 shift schedule.
What does onboarding look like?
